How UPSC Calculates Final Ranking

The final ranking in the Civil Services Examination is based on the combined marks obtained in two stages:

  • Written Main Examination – 1750 marks

  • Personality Test or Interview – 275 marks

The total marks considered for the final ranking are 2025 marks. The preliminary examination is only used as a screening test and its marks are not included in the final merit list.

What Happens After the UPSC Final Result

After the announcement of the final result, the next administrative steps begin for the selected candidates.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) will initiate the service allocation process. Allocation will depend on the candidate’s rank, category, and service preference mentioned in the Detailed Application Form.

Candidates recommended for appointment will also undergo medical examinations at designated hospitals.

Following medical clearance, the selected candidates will begin training as Officer Trainees at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The foundation course typically lasts around fifteen weeks.
