ICSE Class 9 Syllabus 2026-27: Subject-Wise PDF Download for CISCE Board Exam

If you've searched for the ICSE Class 9 syllabus 2026-27 and ended up with five slightly different answers, you're not imagining things. CISCE doesn't publish a document with that exact name. The syllabus you need exists, though, and it's free to download. This guide shows you which one it is, where to get each subject's PDF, and how to use it without wasting your year.

Where Is the ICSE Class 9 Syllabus 2026-27?

Class 9 students in 2026-27 follow the ICSE Year 2028 Regulations and Syllabuses, released by CISCE in January 2026. There's no separate "Class 9" booklet. Class IX and Class X share one two-year syllabus, and each subject file says which portion belongs to which class.

Why ICSE 2028, Not 2027?

This is the mix-up that trips up most parents and students. The board exam year is the year students finish Class 10, so the two batches sit in different cycles right now.

ICSE Class 9 Subjects and Marks Structure

CISCE splits subjects into three groups. This layout is from the ICSE 2027 Regulations, the last full version I could read. The 2028 document runs a few pages longer for subjects, so check its subject list before you finalise choices.

A few rules worth knowing. Students enter at least six subjects, and most take both Science and Maths. Subject changes aren't allowed after 15 September of the Class IX registration year. And you can't pick up a subject in Class X that you didn't study in Class IX.

Subject-Wise ICSE Class 9 Syllabus Highlights

I couldn't open the PDFs directly (cisce.org blocks automated access), so what follows comes from excerpts of the official files plus earlier editions. I've marked which is which. Treat this as a map, then open the PDF for the full detail.

English

English is compulsory, and the official file covers Classes IX and X together. You get two papers, each two hours: Paper 1: English Language (80 marks, plus 20 for internal assessment) and Paper 2: Literature in English (80 marks).

Paper 1 opens with a 300 to 350 word composition. That means real practice in organising ideas, arguing a point and writing clearly. The Literature paper is built around your prescribed texts, so check the current list with your school before buying books.

Mathematics

Maths carries 80 marks external and 20 internal, under subject code 51. I couldn't extract the Class IX unit list from the 2028 file. Earlier editions covered arithmetic and commercial mathematics, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and coordinate geometry. Open the PDF and tick off what's actually listed for 2028.

Science: Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Science is really three subjects, each with its own two-hour, 80-mark paper plus 20 marks of practical work.

For Chemistry, the official note says reactions should be studied with reactants, products, conditions, observations and balanced equations. That tells you how to write answers, not just what to learn.

Social Studies: History, Civics and Geography

The H.C.G. group is split into two separate papers, each two hours with 80 marks external and 20 internal.

History & Civics starts with a Civics section: Our Constitution and Elections. The file says students need an elementary study only, without learning Constitutional Articles word for word. The History half in an earlier edition ran from the Harappan civilisation through Vedic society, Jainism and Buddhism, and on to medieval India. Confirm the current list in the 2028 file.

Geography opens with Our World: Earth as a planet, latitudes and longitudes, and rotation and revolution. Earlier editions moved on to the structure of the Earth, landforms and rocks. Expect diagrams and map skills to matter.

Computer Applications and Other Electives

Computer Applications (86) works differently from the 80:20 subjects. The 2028 file describes a 100-mark, two-hour theory paper and 100 marks of internal assessment. It opens with object-oriented programming concepts and builds into Java. An earlier edition asked for at least 20 programming assignments across the year, so keep your records tidy.

Physical Education (72) lists a 100-mark theory part, starting with human anatomy and physiology.

What's Changed in the ICSE Class 9 Syllabus for 2026-27?

I'll be upfront: I could not read the 2028 syllabus files line by line against the 2027 ones, so I can't give you a reliable subject-by-subject list of what's new. I'd rather say that than guess.

What is confirmed for your syllabus (ICSE 2028):

• CISCE released the Regulations and Syllabuses for ICSE Year 2028 in January 2026.
• The two-year course structure, 75% minimum attendance rule and 31 July cut-off for regularising Class IX admission are in the 2028 regulations.
• Individual 2028 subject files exist for English, H.C.G., Maths, Science, Computer Applications and more (see the table above). Whether their content differs from the 2027 versions is something I couldn't confirm, so compare them with last year's copies.

Previous-year data (ICSE 2027, announced February 2025): CISCE replaced "Pass Certificate Awarded" with "Qualified," merged the Statement of Marks and Pass Certificate into one document, added Bhutia Language at ICSE level, and revised History & Civics, Geography, Chemistry, Economics, Economic Applications, Commercial Studies, Assamese, Marathi, Carnatic Music and Robotics & AI. These changes were for the 2027 exam, so don't treat them as 2028 changes.

A reported signal: Media coverage says CISCE planned a 25% rise in competency-based questions from 2025-26. That's a reason to practise application-style questions early.

Dates to watch: One report says ICSE 2028 registration runs from 5 August to 31 October 2026 without a late fee. Ask your school to confirm.

How to Download the ICSE Class 9 Syllabus from the Official CISCE Website

1. Open cisce.org in your browser.
2. Go to Library (Publications).
3. Choose Regulations and Syllabuses – ICSE.
4. Pick Year 2028 (not 2027).
5. Download the subject PDFs you need, or use the direct links above.
6. Save them to your phone or print them. CISCE expects every candidate to have a copy of the syllabus for their exam year.

Preparation Tips Based on the Syllabus

Use the PDF as your checklist. Print your subject files and tick topics off as you finish them. Guidebooks sometimes add or skip things.

Read the notes in italics. CISCE uses them to define depth. Lines like "without verbatim study" or "briefly" tell you how much detail to go into.

Guard your internal marks. Twenty percent of most subjects is school-assessed, and Group III subjects count 50%. Projects and practicals aren't a side task.

Start with English. It's compulsory, and promotion from Class IX to X requires at least 33% in five subjects including English, with 75% attendance. That rule comes from the 2027 regulations, so confirm it for 2028 with your school.

Practise application, not memory. Write balanced equations, sketch diagrams, work through maps. The board has been pushing competency-based questions.

Treat Class 9 as the base layer. Class X papers revisit Class IX topics. Keep neat notes now and you'll thank yourself later.
