The Opportunity
We’re re-architecting our core data platform as part of a multi-year product modernization initiative leading into the 2027 season. This role is a key part of that journey.
We’re looking for an experienced Backend / API Engineer with strong data expertise to help redesign and optimize our analytical data warehouse and the APIs that power our products. You’ll work hands-on with modern backend systems to enable faster, more reliable, and more scalable analytics for a global audience.
About the Role
This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll work closely with our engineering team to bring our future-state architecture to life. Your contributions will directly impact how we deliver high-performance, data-driven insights to clients across the world.
You’ll be responsible for building scalable APIs, optimizing database performance, and contributing to data pipelines that support advanced analytics at scale.
What You’ll Do
API Development

Design, build, and maintain high-performance, low-latency APIs (REST, GraphQL) for both customer-facing applications and internal tools.

Ensure APIs are reliable, scalable, and optimized for analytical workloads.
Data Modeling & Database Design

Collaborate with Senior Engineers to translate architectural designs into efficient PostgreSQL schemas.

Balance normalization with analytical read performance when designing data models.
Database Performance & Optimization
-
Implement advanced PostgreSQL strategies including indexing, partitioning, caching, and query tuning.

Analyze query plans and continuously improve database performance for read-heavy systems.
Data Pipelines & Ingestion

Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows.

Ensure data accuracy, freshness, and reliability across distributed systems.
System Reliability & Scalability

Improve the stability and scalability of backend services through monitoring, testing, and CI/CD best practices.

Contribute to operational excellence across our data and API infrastructure.
What We’re Looking For
Experience
-
5+ years of professional experience in Backend Engineering, API Development, or Data Engineering.

Proven experience working with high-scale, read-heavy data systems.
Technical Skills (Required)
-
Strong backend development skills in at least one modern language (Python, Go, Node.js, Ruby, Java, etc.).

Extensive experience designing and consuming robust APIs.

Expert-level proficiency in PostgreSQL, including:

Schema design

Query optimization

Performance tuning

Index and configuration management

Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, including OLTP vs. OLAP design.

Hands-on experience building data ingestion pipelines and ETL/ELT processes in cloud environments.
Soft Skills

Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and product teams.

Comfortable working in a distributed, cross-time-zone environment.
Nice to Have
-
Experience with Elixir / Phoenix for API development.

Background in sports analytics, betting, or digital media data systems.

Experience working with globally distributed teams across US and UK time zones.
